Serengeti, Ngorongoro
The Great Wildebeest Calving Migration Safari is a specialized tour designed to focus on the Great Serengeti Wildebeest migration during calving season, which is from December to April. The safari will cover the Lake Ndutu area, as well as the Southern and Central areas of the Serengeti National Park where the majority of the wildebeest are usually found. Additionally, this tour includes a visit to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 1 - Arrival in Arusha
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a staff member from Zielreise will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Arusha. Here, you will receive a briefing on your upcoming safari adventure. Enjoy a peaceful night's sleep before embarking on your journey the following day!
Arusha, also known as "A" Town by the locals, is located at the base of Mount Meru, the 5th highest mountain in Africa. Its high altitude provides a pleasant climate and beautiful green surroundings. While Arusha itself may not be considered a particularly attractive city, many visitors view it as a necessary stopover before beginning their safari. Nevertheless, the natural charm of the Tanzanian people and the energy of the rapidly growing city make Arusha a destination worth exploring beyond the comforts of air-conditioned safari trucks and satellite-equipped hotel rooms.
Meals for the day will be breakfast (B).
Accommodation will be provided at Kibo Palace Hotel.s.
Day 2 - Arusha to Tarangire National Park.
After breakfast, we will drive to Tarangire National Park where we will have the opportunity to view wildlife in their natural habitat. Our game drive in the park will give you the best chance to see a wide range of animals. Later, we will drive to the small town of Karatu for dinner and overnight.
Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, following Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi, and Mkomazi. During our visit, we will have the chance to witness incredible sights, such as pythons climbing trees, lions, leopards, and many more. Bird enthusiasts should keep an eye out for the beautiful yellow-collared lovebirds, as well as the rufous-tailed weaver and ashy starling. All of these birds are unique to the dry savannah of north-central Tanzania.
Meals included during the trip are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We will be staying at the Endoro Lodge for our overnight accommodation.
Day 3 - Trangire to Ndutu Area
After breakfast, we will head towards the Ndutu area, which is located in the Ngorongoro conservation area and is part of the southern Serengeti ecosystem.
Lake Ndutu, like most other rift lakes, is alkaline. However, the water is still drinkable and consumed by a wide array of local wildlife. The majority of the wildebeest migration can usually be found on the short-grass plains from December to April. The area is usually heavily populated with elephants, birds, and resident game.
Meals provided will be breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will be accommodated at the Acacia Migration Camp.
Day 4 - Ndutu to Serengeti
You will enjoy a game drive after breakfast in the Ndutu area exploring a great range of various habitats such as swamps, woodland, soda lakes and the world famous Serengeti short grass plains. You will witness herds of wildebeest and zebras especially during a short time-frame from around February and lasting for about 3 weeks where majority of the wildebeest calves. Later continue with game viewing while heading to Serengeti Central for dinner and overnight.
The sea of grass provides little cover and the young make an easy prey for a variety of predators. Wildebeest calves can run minutes after they were born and within 3 days, they are normally strong enough to keep up with the herd.
Meals: B, L, D
Accommodation: Acacia Central Camp

Day 6 - Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater
We will depart for Ngorongoro Crater viewing after breakfast. Later in the day, by sunset, we will go straight to your accommodation. Ngorongoro is a vast highland area situated along the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley, with the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater as its main attraction. Although it is not a national park in the strict sense of the word, it was established to conserve wildlife and other natural resources and to protect the interests of indigenous people while promoting tourism.

Day 7 - Karatu to Manyara to Arusha
We will depart after breakfast and head straight to Lake Manyara National Park. In the afternoon, we will return to Arusha. Its lake, which Ernest Hemingway described as 'the loveliest I had seen in Africa', covers two-thirds of the park and is set against the stunning backdrop of the Great Rift Valley. The park is home to over 400 species of birds, including thousands of pink flamingos on their perpetual migration, as well as other water birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and storks.
